SEKO VILLAGE
Before I write about Seko Village allow me to give you a brief background of how it came into existence.
Kondwa Day Centre for Orphans (Kondwa Centre)
Kondwa Centre is non profit, non governmental organization, set up on 4th September 2000 to help the orphans and vulnerable children. The Centre is located in the heart of Ng’ombe compound, one of the poorest compounds in Lusaka.
“KONDWA” means “BE HAPPY” and this is what the volunteer staff strive to bring into the lives of these children happiness and joy. The Centre offers Early Learning (Pre-school) education and caters only for orphaned and vulnerable children from 3 years to 7 years. The children come in at no fee at all.
After 8 years in operation, over 300 children had “graduated” from Kondwa Centre into formal education. We continue to support them with educational requirements. But it was found that even after we had paid all the fees and bought all other requisites for school; some children were not going to school, especially the girl child. Mostly the guardians preferred the girl child to do chores at home or set for early marriage. This and other challenges led to the opening up Seko House.
Seko Village was officially opened on 14th February 2009.
It is a home for 14 orphaned girls and 12 orphaned boys. We have two houses (one for the girls and one for the boys) making it a “village”. “Seko” means “laughter” and this is what we are striving for at Seko Village; to put a smile on the childrens faces.
We offer shelter, assist with education, food, psychosocial care and support (to help build resilience) and spiritual guidance.
We aim to improve the life of a child, by just being a home.
